ART DECO TOURS
Hawke’s Bay is home to “twin cities:” Hastings and Napier - the latter is famously known as the Art Deco Capital of New Zealand.
After a disastrous earthquake and fires, which destroyed Napier and Hastings in 1931, the rebuild created a cityscape of architectural consistency. Many of these charming buildings still form the heart of the city although their uses have changed over time.
With the New Zealand Historic Places Trust registration of the Napier City Centre, many of these buildings are now protected to preserve their cultural and historic integrity. The registration of the Art Deco precinct affirms the authenticity of the buildings leading to international recognition and tourism awards. Areas outside the city centre and around greater Hawke’s Bay also have significant homes and buildings of the era that take pride of place in our history
Our informative tours in modern air-conditioned vehicles highlight the heart of the Art Deco precinct that is architecturally unique in New Zealand. To further experience a by-gone era, a popular option is to tour the district in a classic vintage car, which can usually be hired at short notice.
